The major difference is rest.  The most rest is gained in rem sleep.

The major difference is you dream in REM and get the most rested and you don't dream in NREM and it's not as restful.

REM sleep is rapid eye movement sleep---those are the deep sleep phases when we dream

NREM--is non-rapid eye movement sleep which is considered our lighter sleep---the ones where we don't sleep in a deep sleep.  Usually that's what we have right before we wake up---and REM and NREM follow in certain intervals.....
