Just to clear something up - electronics are NEVER an 'investment'. They take a giant hit in value the second you walk out of the store with them, and continue to depreciate in value until they're worth less than their component parts. If you have the disposable income to blow on electronic toys, go right ahead, but they are a depreciating asset and just about the opposite of a great investment.

On the topic at hand, the 8G touch cost Apple just under $150 to make in late December of '07. Of that price, $40 was for the 8G of flash memory. This is the closest I can get at the moment, maybe you can find more digging around at the link below.
