Does height matter or just the square footage?

  1. I dont really know. That isn't exactly a huge aviary. Your birds should be able to flit around and perch freely without bumping into each other. It shouldn't look like a Petsmart buy one get one free sale. Birds need room. Look at the finches outside. I have never seen them bumping into each other. If you are planning to breed them build some large aviaries for when they are old enough to be on their own. Crowding only leads to disease that spreads like wildfire..---Yogi

  2. Either one singing male or one pair (male and female).  Canaries need plenty of room to fly.  They don't climb cage bars like parrots and don't generally just hop from perch to perch unless they are forced to do so by a cage that's too small.

Male canaries can be aggressive toward one another, as can females.  So if you want a singing male, just house one in there.  If you want to breed canaries, one pair will be fine.  The cage is too small for more.

  3. Only one adult male canary should be in a cage, no matter how

large.  Multiple hens or young birds can be in the same cage,

but after they are 6 months old, the maturing males should be

removed and each put in their own single cage.  The formula

for keeping multiple canaries together is 1 cubic foot per bird,

so your cage should have a maximum of 9 birds.  There should

also be enough perch space at the same highest level for them

all to rest apart from each other.
