  1. Buy a Range Rover ( The best 4x4 by far) or similar 4x4 with full time four wheel drive but remember they will not save you if you still insist on going too fast.

Traction control,Dynamic stability control and Anti lock brakes are great extra safety systems but they can leave you feeling over  confident and can not perform their roles effectively if you still insist on putting the hammer down, my advice is drive slower and with extra caution on any loose or slippery surface, that always helps to keep the shiny side up!

  2. You need to be a little more specific here.  A porsche 959 will do 180 MPH and even a Audi A8 without limiter will hit 190MPH. but they are both road going cars.  A Misubishi Paris Dakar vehicle will hit 150MPH across flat ground and still do 40-50 over rough terrain.  It is all down to the surface. sometimes its better to go fast and other times slow to get the best traction

  3. Most 4X4's will handle about 50 in 4HI.... (check your owners manual for exact figures)  but you need to take into consideration the amount of traction you have in the first place.  If you need to be in 4 wheel drive, you will probably want to reduce your speed anyway.

Remember this about operating in 4 wheel drive.... it may go better, but it will not stop any faster than a comparable vehicle with 2 wheel drive.  In icy conditions, it can actually be worse, because if you come off the throttle too quick and you go into a deceleration skid, it will not only lock the rear wheels, but the front ones as well and you won't be able to steer it.

I would suggest as a guideline for snow and ice... 35 mph.  You will have control and stability and enough time to get stopped if you find the need to avoid an obstacle in the road pops up.  It's better to get to your destination late, than not at all....

Good luck and safe travels over the holiday season.

  4. My Jeep has 2WD, 4WD Full Time and Part Time, and 4LO.

I use 4 Full Time when it's wet, snowy, raining, or I just want a little different handling and/or traction.  it engages a limited slip in my transfer case, so I don't get any loud BANG! or tire chirping on pavement.  No speed limit.

4 Part Time actually locks my transfer case, and I only use it on packed snow and dirt roads when the small difference between the front & rear axle can slip out of the tires. This is the normal 4WD that most "offroad" vehicles come with, and should not be used on dry pavement.  No speed limit, but the conditions I use it in usually limit me to under 60mph.

4LO is for actually driving off-road.  The gearing is very low, and the vehicle will top out at about 35mph.  95% of all SUVs and "4x4" vehicles sold will have this feature, but will only use it by accident since no one actually takes their vehicles on trails anyway.  Dirt roads don't count, Mr. Hummer, sorry.

4LO with lockers in the diffs will get you over some sweet mountain passes, especially if you aren't afraid of a little body damage.
