  1. The way the question is worded, I'm interpreting to ask, "what would be considered the highest speed an average person could maintain for 10 minutes, without assist?"

I'm reading the "without assist" into the question, because if you add assist, it doesn't matter if it's an average person or Lance(tm) - the dominating factor becomes the amount of assist.

Since the average person rides a mountain bike, and is far below 'enthusiast' level, I'd say 12 mph over 10 minutes' time would be doing good. For an enthusiast riding an enthusiast-level road bike, 18 to 20 mph would be more like it, although those speeds could likely be maintained for an hour or more. For definition sake, an enthusiast would be someone who rides several times per week, for an hour or more per ride.

  2. i have push my gmc road bike to 40mph on flat level ground but a cheap bike from wal mart i only got 27mph

  3. it depends on the bike and terrain id say 25 on a flat road with a 10 speed

  4. I would guestimate 10-15mph.

You can REACH a higher speed, but 10 minutes is an awefully long time for the average person to keep up a steady high speed.

  5. IF the surface is flat, and you are on a high bridge and you hit and go over the guard rail, you should reach about 110 mph.

  6. Going down the hill near my house I have seen people come down that hill on a bike going at least 30mph. I am scared for these people mostly teenage boys because at the height of their speed they have to either turn right on the street or go head first into a dead end cul-de-sac where there is usually a car parked near a tree. Yikes!!!!!!!

  7. about 10 miles and hour

  8. ON STREETS WITHOUT A LICENSE, IT SHOULD BE 25 MPH. BUT IN ALL STATES BUT THE NORTHWEST. ALL BICYCLES ARE LICENSED WITH SMALL LICENSES PER BIKE. ONLY IN THE NORTHWEST A BICYCLE CAN BREAK LAWS THAT US RESPONSIBLE DRIVERS PAY FOR, LIKE WHEN ONE OF THEM DARTS OUT INTO THE STREET AND GETS HIT ITS OUR FAULT. OR WHEN STOPPED AT A CONSTRUCTION SITE THEY GO THROUGH, OR A RED LIGHT THEY GO THROUGH, BUT WE CANT. IN THE N.W. ALL BIKES SHOULD BE LICENSED AND HEAVILY INSURED EVEN MOTORCYCLES DONT HAVE TO BE INSURED AND ALL THESE 2 WHEELERS ARE MORE VULNERABLE TO INSTANT DEATH THAN A 4 WHEELER. TALK ABOUT DUMB.

  9. I know i can do 30 when im really working at it.

  10. prob about 32mph

  11. ive gone the kesle run in telve parsecs once

  12. Well, if you are drafting a car [you need the cooperation of the driver] I would expect fifty miles an hour would be possible.

The source below says 45 mph, unassisted.

  13. I did 61 mph on a 16% downhill, but i don't know if i am in the average category. I compete at U23 in the national championship.

  14. 120 km.

  15. For an average person using performance roadbikes it's 20-30 Miles/hour. when you are drafting with a van with the cooperation with the driver about 40-60M/H. if a pro racer with high performance bike detrmined to do it on downhill with nice flatsurface with long straight aways about 150-200M/H This is the fastest speed on bikes ever been achieved by the world record on maximum speed on roadbikes.

  16. 50 mph

  17. depends on the terrain and the traffic, 15 miler per hour.

  18. Depends on the bike really. On my old mountain bike I could go 40 km/h, but on my new Trek hybrid bike I could push 60 km/hr. It's all on the weight of bike, wheel and tire size, and gear ratios.

  19. 20 mph, 30-40 absolute max depending on fitness level

  20. On a good downhill, I can hold over 40mph.  My top speed EVER is 60.5mph, and it was a kick in the pants!  In fact, I was cruising at over 50mph down from the mountains today; takes a toll on the back after too long, though.

  21. it depends on the bike design, an old fashioned bike maybe 12mph, a modern racing bike 20mph, a modern recumbent 25mph.

  22. im guessing 25 mph
