What is the maximum depth of the earth that life can survive?

In spirit of Jules Vernes movie, how deep in the earth can life survive? Ive heard of 'dark life', animals that can survive by living from volcanic activity but surely life( especially micro organisms) can survive several miles from the earth surface.

I don't think we know the answer to that question yet. We continue to be surprised at finding life where we never expected it could be. Maybe humans are too self-centered and think life can only live in an environment similar to that where we can exist.
