I am planning to install a security camera at home so I can keep watch over our house even when I'm not there. Problem is, the gate is quite far from our house. What is the maximum length for a security camera cable from the cam to the DVR?

  1. If you are using RG59U coaxial cable, maximum recommended length is about 750'. With RG6U cable, you can go about 1500'.

    If you are going more than 250' or so, it often makes sense to use a UTP transmission system, such as the one made by NVT http://www.nvt.com

    These systems allow you to use twisted-pair cable instead of coaxial cable. This is often less expensive and easier to install when the camera is more than short distance away from the DVR.
