I have a tourist VISA and plan to visit the US for about half a year.

What is the maximum number of consecutive days I can spend in the US with a tourist VISA?

If I need to stay more than that period, do I need to exit the US and enter again after a few days or do I need to ask for an extension or another VISA type?

  1. 6 months at a strech.Yes you can exit and enter again.

  2. The maximum number of days is 180.  The actual number you'll be allowed will be set by the CBP Officer at the port of entry.

No, you can not step out for a few days and then come back.  The CBP Officer will immediately see what you are doing and refuse to admit you.  Also, a file will be opened on you and a note will be made that you are possibly trying to live in the United States on a tourist visa.
