It depends on the year and your age.  For 2008, it's $5,000 for people under 50 and $6,000 for people 50 or older.  The amount might be limited further if you contribute to an employer plan (like a 401(k)).  It also might be limited if you earned less than $5,000 or $6,000 during that year or the previous year.
