I have been paying for petrol with my debit card at the same supermarket for the last 7 years without any problems. This week i checked my bank account and found the supermarket company had taken 12 transactions out of my account totaling nearly £300 for petrol i have bought over the last 3 months without any warning. Is this legal or just unethicle?

  1. it  should  be  taken  out  the  minute  you  do  the  transaction  if  it  is  debit  because  I  check  mine  on  line  all  the  time  and  it  is  done  right  away...................and  you  should  balance  your  checks  right  after  you  use  your  debit  card  so   you  don't  be  surprised

  2. You HAD warning.  YOU bought petrol, you should have KNOWN you had to pay for it.  Even if they did something wrong, YOU are the guilty party in this question.

  3. I do not know about Europe regulations.   In the U.S. with a signature card transactions they can take up to a year.  I read some purchase didn't even get posted for two years.   It is really up to the bank.   Most banks it is 30 days.

I don't know if it was a Visa debit card you used.  You didn't specify.   They may have ran the card as a visa card and not as a debit card.  This is why it took longer.  The best think to do is ask your bank,  how long do merchants have to run the card through?

  4. You bought petrol.  Used your debit card which takes the money out of your account the minute you use it.  And, now you want to blame the petrol company for taking money out of your account to pay for the petrol that you purchased.

Why would you need warning?  Didn't you get a receipt when you made your purchases?

And, you are questioning if this is legal or unethical???  I think it is illegal and unethical to KNOWINGLY make a purchase and EXPECT TO NOT PAY FOR IT!!!!
