  1. HI..... Maximum range??? On a day with no wind and breeze about 300 yards......  But if its windy or breezy forget about accurately hitting anything at that distance... The bullet can go the distance but what good is it if it just sails right past the target...........  I say its a good 100 to 150 yard cartridge if threre's a little wind.......

  2. yeah, come on guys. A centerfire .17 is a .17 Rem, this is apples and oranges to a .17 HMR. the .17 Remington is like a .223 case with a .17 cal bullet on it. The HMR is a .22 mag case necked down to .17. This is like someone asking how far an M16 will kill a person at, and people saying, well my .22 only kills at 50 yards.

Having said all that, my .17 HMR has killed many coyotes at 200 yds. All head shots, but I'm pretty sure a .17 centerfire would do a LOT more.

  3. I don't want to sound like an ****, but some of you knuckle heads need to understand that 17HMR is a rimfire cartridge, so your barking up the wrong tree. The guy is asking about 17 centerfire. At 100 yards the 17HMR  offers up a whopping 136 ft lbs of energy using a 17gr Hornady V-MAX cartridge. Additionally, for those of you not in the know there is a .17 Mach 2 chambering that has ballistics that are even more inferior, having only 88 ft lbs of energy at 100 yards using the Hornady 17gr V-MAX cartridge in .17 Mach 2.  I don't think my ethics would allow me to take a fox with either of those calibers. 17HMR is a rabbit and squirrel gun in my opinion. And .17 Mach 2, well let's just say that's for the birds.

  4. i wouldn't try much farther than 100/150 yards unless your know you are capable of placing a shot well enough that it brings down the animal cleanly and a greater distance.

  5. I assume by 17 centerfire you are referring to 17 Remington. From the ballistic charts at guns and ammo the Remington 20gr plastic points produce 407 ft lbs of energy at 200 yards and 284 ft lbs of energy at 300 yards. The Remington 25gr hollow points produce 388 ft lbs of energy at 200 yards and 242 ft lbs of energy at 300 yards. To be ethical, and produce a clean kill I’d stop at 250 yards, allowing sufficient energy for the kill.

  6. G'Day mate what do you mean by 17? if your talking about 17 hmr i shot a fox about 250 meters. cheers mate

  7. Got a coyote Saturday at about 175 yards using the 17 hmr ballistic tip remington out of a Marlin

  8. 100 yds is pretty much your max range with a .17

  9. are you guys serous?? 100 yards??? 150 yards?? my 17 HMR is shoot between 1/4" and 1/2 inch between 100 and 150yards. I've already shot a fox at 260 yards with a 20 grain plactic tip, and i've already taken a woodchuck at 300 yards, and yotes at 150 yards

but anyway maximum range for it on fox??? i wouldnt shoot fox over 250 with it

a centerfire 17 has close to 600ft lb on it at 100 yards and close to and over 400ft lbs at 200yards. OH and for the guy that said that the 17 should be kept as a squirrel gun umm yeah NOT. i've already shot a ground squirrel at 130 some yards and the thing just about blew up, when i went and looked at it, it was gutted, no legs on the 1 side, head was non exsistent, So i'd hate to see what it would do at closer ranges
