  1. There's a limit, Wind Resistance mainly, on how fast you can go.

Plus it'll take a loong time to reach such a speed on a fixed geared bike with such a large ratio.

  2. The speed you can reach with your bike is based on the gear inches.  1 revolution of your legs on the cranks will turn your rear wheel X times.  This is based on the ratio of teeth on the front chainring to the number of teeth on the rear.  For example a 48 tooth chainring on the front and 16 on the rear would be a 3 to 1 ratio.  This means that every rotation of your legs in front turns the rear wheel 3 times.

you can calculate your speed with the following formula.

    48 (front teeth) X 26 inches X 80 RPM / 16 X 60 (minutes) X 3.14 (Pi) / 12 (inches per foot) / 5280 (feet per mile)

This would give you a speed of 18.55mph.

The way to increase your speed is to change the gear ratio or increase your cadence.  A larger front ring (more teeth than 48), smaller rear gear (fewer than 16 teeth), increasing the wheel size or increasing your pedaling speed will all increase your speed.

I should point out that, while it is theoretically possible to hit 40mph on a fixed gear bicycle, the gear ratio you would have to have (53/10 or so) would be incredibly difficult to use on any sort of hilly terrain.

Buy a geared bike so you can go fast on the flats AND still make it up the hills without walking.

  3. Regardless of the kind of bike you've got, even if you could hit 40 mph you would not be able to sustain that speed for any significant time with respect to commuting.

  4. I would not buy a fixed gear bike for commuting. You're going to want multiple gears to get up hills easier and go down them faster. It will make your life much much easier.

  5. It will go as fast as someone can possibly peddle it.

  6. as fast as you can turn the crank

  7. The bike will go as fast as it can before the bike fails. This is usually when the wheel warps from heat and expanding parts like bearing races and bearings or a burst tire from heat friction.
