I am having a bit of trouble with my car lately and my car's overdrive fan goes on quite often. I was wondering what the maximum temperature an engine can go up to? Thanks in advance!

  1. Look on the bottle. You do not want your engine to go over 240 to 260 degrees. BOOM!

  2. >> car's overdrive fan

    Do you mean RADIATOR fan?

The proper operating temp for an engine is  below 240 F (slight above water boiling point).  This is achieve by pressuring the radiator (water) and raising the boiling point of the water to about 250F (which is slight above the MAX engine temp).

It is normal for a car in the summer (with heat and AC running) for the fan to come on.  In fact you should worry if the fan didn't come on.

    Good luck...

  3. under 240 degrees..never heard of overdrive fan...make sure u have 50/50 coolant/water and clean and keep filled...keep oil clean and  full.it also helps cooling..

  4. you may b talking of the 2'nd fan. 1 is 4 the engine, the other is 4 your a/c system 2 turn the hot gas into a liquid again. sometimes this fan will come on to assist the other fan if the temp. goes above normal. u may want to check your rad. cap 4 proper pressure, as sometimes the spring or the gasket gets weak. have a mech. check your thermostat, fan sensors, water pump, and overheat sensors. also check your coolant level in the radiator and res.   happy hunting!
