I am American and my wife is Indian. We are living in India. We just gave birth to a baby girl. We will be having a small party for her at our home soon. I am wondering about the religious meaning behind the giving of sweets like peda or gelabi by the parents to the guests at the party. Any references or explanations would be appreciated. Thanks!

  1. Food is a very big part of Indian culture.

So are Indian sweets. So yeah, I guess we Indians love celebrating events with lots of food and ofcourse, sweets- for desert :)

There is no religious meaning behind this tho...  its just part of Inidan culture.. lots of food and sweets :)

oh and congrats ont he birth of ur baby hope u have an awesome party..

  2. It's not actually specifically a Hindu tradition, but one common throughout the Asian Subcontinent. It's basically just a reciprocation, as the birth of a child is a joyous occassion and when you spread the word, people feel obligated to sweeten the mouths of the bearer of good news. Similarly, you in return share sweets to indicate that you are bringing them sweet news.

  3. I'm hindu myself. It has been a custom in hindu culture for hundreds of years to give out sweets when a baby is born.

This is because the parent's want their baby to be blessed with good luck and fortune.

Parents also do this to prevent the "evil eye" from harming their newborn child.

Since it is customary to have a party, giving away sweets prevents any form of jealousy, hatred or envy from attacking the newborn. Some people beleive that if the "evil eye" does harm the baby, than he or she will be sick.

Therefore, sweets remove bad feelings, and make everyone bless you instead of feel jealous of you.

  4. Nothing religious. Sweets are acceptable to all. Its alternatives like wine are not.

  5. dont know  but  it sounds alot better than giving out cigars  when  ya have a baby in  usa..thats what the daddys do here
