What is the meaning of 'The premise of the premise'?

Also would be thankful if someone can say the meaning of 'the principle of the principle'.

  1. reducing a high level premise into more elementary components. same with principle.


  2. Have to admit that i'm not overly familiar with this concept. What I have heard of is that many logical premises contain certain presupposed (or assumed) prior premises. Of course, when we enter this kind of discussion, philosophical debates normally collapse into hours of defining terms (which may of course be the point in raising such an issue for a Wittgensteinian...?)

    Some examples: Premise - it is wrong to murder humans. The premises of this initial premise can be broken down into maybe 1) Human life is valuable 2) murder is violating the right to life of another.

    ..then of course my new "meta-premise" 2) can collapse into further issues about the presumption of the 'right to life'...which shows us how nitpicky and pedantic this kind of game can get!
