What is the meaning of 'Troll'?

I've seen quite a few people refer to 'trolls'. I can't seem to piece together what a Troll is. Could someone please fill me in? It would help alot.

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]

The contemporary use of the term first appeared on Usenet groups in the late 1980s. A troll usually flames threads without staying on topic, unlike a "Flamer" who flames a thread because he/she disagrees with the content of the thread.
