  1. This is a "symbolic" adoption..you do not actually obtain the animal itself.  It is a way to donate money to help animals and to protect their natural habitat.  Many times, they will send you a stuffed animal representing the animal you picked to help.

  2. When you adopt an animal you are giving money to the organization to aid in protecting and studing the animal.  You may not be the only one adopting a specific animal and most of your money may be just going into the organization rather than the actual protection or study of the critter.

  3. mean environmentalists groups wants your $$$

  4. I like the phrase Birdgirl uses -- "symbolic adoption".  It's not as if you'll open the front door some Saturday afternoon to find a 900 pound polar bear sitting there saying, "The World Wildlife Fund sent me over; you adopted me last month.  Where's the fridge?"

The first link below is to the WWF adoption center.  You can adopt anything from a dolphin, to a lemur, to a tiger, to a horned puffin.  Adoption levels vary from $25 - $100.  Over 80% of the money goes directly into programs helping the animals.  The adoption includes various gifts and updates on how your animla is doing out in the wild.
