  1. It refrences a school of thought, or method of teaching, by rhetoric that occured before the self-analyitical style of Socrates.  


  2. They are probably Greek scholars that lived before Socrates.

  3. They represented a proto-philsophical aproach which was being experimented with for the first time, the attempt to differentiate human kind from nature and god.

    Socrates is the first man to fully realize this quest, this invention of the Greeks.
