What is the meaning of calling Broadway "The Great White Way"?

This goes back before my time, I was just wondering where it came from and it's meaning

The Theater district was one of the first places that were Electrified and the white lights were blinding to people who were accustomed to gas lighting... so Broadway became known as "The Great White Way" because of all the marquees being lit up at night
