  2. Open Interest is the total number of shares oustanding in the form of options and futures contracts not yet exercised or closed out of.  

    So a company with very high open interest indicates that alot of speculation (or hedging) is taking place using derivatives of its stock.  for example, if open interest is very high because of a ton of put options sitting out there, then that's a negative sign (all else equal) for the companies stock.   vice versa if it's call options.
