What is the meaning of the surname Gershbovitz ?

This was my Moms maiden name. I know that the suffix ( the ending) "ovitz" means "son of". I have looked everywhere but i cant find it. Can someone please help. Thanks!

  1. I found a Max Gershbovitz on www.ancestry.com from Lornza, Russia born 15 March 1882 living in the Bronx, NY.  I went to babelfish and found tons of information, some of which needs payment.  I would go there to find information.  There was a lot that was free.  

    It could mean the son of and then the name of an area.


  2. I've never really seen the last name Gershbovitz, but Gershovitz. The Gersh part may have been taken from the Yiddish word Hirsh meaning Deer. The word is a derivative of the German word Hirz, meaning the same thing. The person who took on the last name Gershbovitz, may have changed the spelling from Hirsh to Gersh.
