I have been unable to find this name on any of the usual name/surname information websites - the most I know is that it seems to be of northern European (scandinavian? german?) origin. Does anyone have any insights into the etymology or original meaning of the name?

  1. This is all I've been able to find and it's origin appears to be Swedish. Landel also seems often to be mentioned in a Scottish context, but I'm not sure of the accuracy of those references.

Land is an English place name that described the man who lived in the country rather than in a town. The term had a more specialized sense in the Middle Ages, and was also applied to a forest glade from Middle English lande = heath. Occasionally, it described the man from Launde in Leicestershire, which was named from the same term. Lawn is a variation. Cognates include Landt, Land (German); Landh, LANDELL, Landelius, Landen, Landin (Swedish ornamental); Landberg, Landegren, Landquist, Landstrom (Swedish compound ornamental).

  2. There are also some immigrants with this name  from France and Germany.
