  1. The ventilation rate is the rate at which a building can be cleared of polluted air i.e. how long it takes for a given volume of clean air to clear the building.

Factors: Size of the building, number of ventilators and vents and their output volume available, the degree of pollution, the type of pollution, how clear of pollutants must the building be.

  2. Ventilation rate is the time taken for air to expell from a building. I

t may be natural, or mechanical.

Infiltration should also be considered, this is the expelling of air from any unsealed parts of the building.

The prominant direction of wind may affect it.

The temperature of the air will affect flows around a building. See stack ventilation for a ventilation system that improves the ventilation rate in this way.
