What is the meaning or significance of the star homeowners have on their homes in the midwest and elsewhere?

I have seen a lot of homes in Ohio and Kentucky with a large ornamental star attached to their houses and was wondering if there is a meaning for it. Anyone have a clue?

They are also proudly displayed on the interior of homes.  They represent that someone in the house or family is serving in the armed forces.  The only ones I've seen in Kentucky homes, for example, outside or in, are blue.  That represents the current person is alive and serving.  If the star is gold it represents they sacrificed their lives for the cause.

Fewer people displayed the stars or banners of flags with the stars in the center during the Vietnam war due to conflicted feelings the country had toward the war.
