What is the meaning or significant of the numbers marked on both end of the an airport runway?

sometimes 02, 27, 07, or 09, etc... is it elevation? aircraft speed? gust? but i think its not. what this means???

  1. It is a number system that tells the pilots what runway to use. If there is more than one runway pointing in the same direction (parallel runways), each runway is identified by appending Left (L), Center (C) and Right (R) to the number — for example, Runways One Five Left (15L), One Five Center (15C), and One Five Right (15R). Runway Zero Two Left (02L) becomes Runway Two Zero Right (20R) when used in the opposite direction


  2. those are the runway headings or directions. if you ever looked at a detailed compass you will see that there are numbers on it . the runway markings such as 27 just show the direction 27 would be heading alomst west

  3. I believe it is the number of the runway.  For example, control could tell the pilots of a plane that they are to land on runway 09.
