  1. Amtrak is the way to go, When i was about 9 my family left from San Jose  To  go to Victoria, Canada. We took amtrak all the way to Seattle ,Washington then a ferry to Victoria,

the train ride was 24 hours one way but It was the best trip I can remember, the train has a bar car dining car and the food was awsom, the veiw of the country was unreal. My brother just took that same trip again and he loved it all over again, but he got a room of his own for him and the wife that could only make the trip better, the ferry to victoria was only 4 hours, the only thing i can remember that could have been better was in the movie car they had something other then

Billy Holiday in Lady sings the Blues, so bring a laptop get your own room and enjoy, and plenty of DVD's, I'll never forget that movie saw it 13 times.

  2. Amtrak travels from Sacremento CA to Vancouver.  You can take BART from Berkley to the San Francisco rail depot, Amtrak has bus service inculded in it's fare from Vancouver to SF to and from the SF rail depot on trains to or from Sacremento.

  3. The Amtrak Coast Starlight is the way to go, as far north as Seattle.  From there you would take a connecting train to Vancouver.

For now, the Coast Starlight is only running between LA and Sacramento.  At this writing (March 5) the rail line is closed in central Oregon due to a mudslide, so Amtrak is using a chartered bus on I-5 for the trip north of Sacramento, as far as Seattle.   The rail line is expected to re-open some time in April 2008.

  4. Your closest Amtrak connection for where you want to go is Oakland or Emeryville.  The train you are going to need to take is called the Coast Starlight #14 Northbound and the #11 Southbound.

Be aware though.  Due to massive rains in the Oregon area, track closures have forced Amtrak to terminate the trains in Sacramento.  A large landslide in Chemult, Oregon north of Klamath Falls, have caused Union Pacific to close the route until it can be reopened.  The alternate route in the area is not approved by FRA, (Federal Railway Administration), for passenger rail travel.  This route is designated for freight traffic only.

The route is not scheduled to reopen until after April 1, 2008.

If your intent is to visit family, I would advise that you fly into Vancouver until the Right of Way is repaired after April.

    Good Luck
