If my parents want to give me medications but I don't want them can I tell the doctor not to write a prescription? I live in TN if it makes a difference.

  1. In TN, probably not... unless you can prove to a judge you are capable of making the choice, but it will likely require emancipation.

Speak to the doctor of your concerns. A change in meds may alleviate any side effects. But in two years you will be able to discontinue anything you feel is doing more harm then good anyway...

  2. If you have side effects you don't like, you need to discuss that with your doctor.

If you don't have a legitimate reason for refusing, it is a matter of discipline, and not a medical matter, and the doctor will not be able to help you. Your doctor can not stop your parents from disciplining you for not taking your meds.

  3. They can tell the doctor what to do,  but they can not physically make you take the pill.

  4. As long as you live at home and are their dependent minor,  they can do what they want.   If you do not like it move out, get a job to support yourself and file to be an emancipated minor.   Then you will be an "adult" and can make your own medical decisions....

  5. Since you are legally still a minor your parents make all the legal decisions for you. Those decisions also include telling a doctor to prescribe the medication.

For you to be able to tell the doctor NO, I do not want these medications, you will have to become emancipated. To do that you will have to convince a judge that you are able to support yourself and be a viable part of society without any support from your parents.
