What is the mega block of railway?Why is it done?

there is curtailment of suburban railway service in mumbai due to this mega block, what is this? why is it necessary?will it help commuters?

I think they r relaying the tracks in bulk so that in one go all the old ones are removed and the fresh ones are laid. If u continue laying it when there is movement of traffic it will take considerable time and effort.

Mega Block is called when railway company stop all operation on rail line (Can be both lines Or on single line -In case of double track) to carry major operations like new lines ,relaying of old lines,repair on a bridge etc...

Usually in cities this operation is started at Friday Night and finish by Monday morning so people effected are less.
