The currency is the Mexican Peso or just simply "peso".  It is written using the same dollar sign as we use for the US Dollar.  Curretly (as of the close of business on Friday) the exchange rate is 10.77 pesos per 1 US dollar.  Note also that in Mexico sales tax (IVA) is included IN THE PRICE.  That means there is no 7 or 8% above the ticketed item.
