  1. The mid atlantic ridge runs down the middle of the atlantic ocean. it is also the cause of sea floor spreading, where magma rises out of the ridge and widens the atlantic. But at a very slow rate. So the distance between America and europe is increasing maybe a few cm every year :)

  2. a ridge right down the middle of the atlantic where the american and african plate are pushing together forming effectively a mountiain range under the sea!

  3. It is a ridge in the middle of the Altantic Ocean floor. It is formed by sea floor spreading, which is the result of the divergent plate movement of the South American Plate and the African Plate, as well as the North Amercian Plate and the Eurasian Plate.

Basically, it is formed because the two pairs of plates are constantly moving away from each other, thus forming gaps in the ocean floor where magma rises and cools to form new crusts, thus the ridge.

Iceland is formed by this phenomeneon. (Notice that Iceland lies along the mid Altantic ridge)
