  1. It depends on the internal resistance of the battery, which in turn depends on the type of the battery.

A normal alkaline PP3 style battery has a recommended minimum load of 47 ohms, which would allow it to supply about 190mA at 9V output, however, because of the internal resistance, the output voltage will be lower than 9V, more like 7.5V, so the current would be 160mA.

If you short out the battery then you will get more current, but then the output voltage will be zero! Also you will damage the battery.

  2. forget doing all of the math. all you need to know is that it is written on all batteries by law. read the back. if you cant find it, cross reference it with the table on wikipedia for the type of battery. it is under "capacity".
