while being a full time student (12+ units) but the reason why i am asking this is because this semester is gonna be a bit hectic and I plan on dropping one of my classes. I was gonna take pre-calc2 (trig), programming, and chemistry. but chemistry will literally force me to be at the school a total of 9 hours on mondays so i am going to drop it.

back to my question, will fafsa still cover my registration fee's (units) if I take only 8 units this semester? ( i already have fafsa and my bill is only $38 dollars for 13 units but if i drop chem i will only be taking 8 units). will i have to pay back fafsa or something since this semester i will be part time? how does that work?

  1. A student must be enrolled at least half time to qualify for Stafford loans or PLUS loans, and full time to qualify for an Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) or SMART Grant.

Students do NOT require even half-time enrollment to be eligible for a Pell Grant, BUT the amount of Pell that you will receive is directly tied to your enrollment status.

You'll want to check with your financial aid office to make sure that your aid eligibility is not going to decrease if you drop below full-time status. When financial aid analyzed your "need" this semester, they based your cost of attendance on full-time enrollment. If you drop below 12 credit hours, your cost of attendance will decrease (not just because of your tuition, but also because of your books and possibly certain school fees that might only apply to full time students). If your cost of attendance drops too low, you may not be eligible for the full amount of funds that you are receiving now. You always need to notify financial aid if your enrollment status changes.

    Good luck to you.

  2. You must maintain 6 credit hours in order to receive federal student aid.

If you have a balance left I suggest you leave it (balance from your grant) and let it cover the spring semester.

You won't have to pay it back unless you fall below part time.
