  1. I agree with Bob but I read somewhere that the money has to be on deposit for 3 months before you can apply for the O-A visa.

But this is Thailand so sometimes the rules apply and sometimes they don't.  I've opened bank account on a tourist visa and supposedly you can do that.

Here is a website for expats in Pattaya and they say its usually easier to get the Visa before you leave and they give some details.

  2. FINANCIAL REQUIREMENT:

    1. BANK ACCOUNT SHOWING THB 800,000

    2. MONTHLY INCOME OF AT LEAST THB 65,000

    3. COMBINATION (BANK ACCOUNT + INCOME x 12 = THB 800,000)

  3. For a retirement visa here in Thailand you need to show income of 65,000 baht or savings  and income totaling 800,000 baht.  Once your here for a year and want to extend your visa for an additional year you need to show income 65,000 baht a month, you do this by getting a letter from your embassy certifying your income, or show that you transferred into country 800,000 baht.  For Information on applying for a retirement visa goggle the web site of the Thai Embassy in your country.  For information on extending your visa check the web site below.  The Thai Baht is now about 34 baht to the US dollar, but who knows what it will be in the next few months or years, when I came here it was over 40 to the dollar.  So actually my income has been reduced over the past three years.

edit:  nam is correct on the 3 month rule, you must have the money in your Thai Bank account at least 3 months prior to requesting an extention,  but that is when apply for an extention , not appling for the visa itself.

  4. That's 65,000 baht a month minimum income, not a year and deposit 800,000 baht minimum.

If you don't qualify you may want to consider the Philippines.

The deposit is only $10,000 for an SSRV (retirement visa) and a minimum income of $800 a month.

You can also stay for 14 months at a time on a tourist visa and skip the retirement visa process and still live here.

The cost of living in the Philippines is cheaper and english is one of the national languages.
