Jeremy is totally right in saying 8 years... You'll sign a 4x4, 5x3, or 6x2... 4 years reserves 4 years IRR... 5 years reserves 3 years IRR... or 6 years reserves 2 years IRR...

As a person who served in the Air Force Reserves, it was 6 years of actual drilling and 2 years of inactive reserves. That was the minimum commitment when I join in 1999. However, it would be best to speak with a reserves recruiter. Don't just stop in to your local recruiting station, they will try to get you to join active duty. Call the reserves 1-800 number and ask to speak with the nearest reserves recruiter. And stand your ground with the recruiter, he needs you more than you need him (usually).

Four years. But if you plan on retiring, you can not do it in 20 years, your retirement date would be the day your turn 65, unless they raise the retirement age.

well, i can provide the best answer i know..... 8 years. Provided the air force doesn't do something crazy different than the marines. (i am a marine reservist)  now, this is the part you are looking for.... that 8 years isn't all on active reserve. you may get like a 4x4, 5x3 or 6x2 contract. meaning you will actively drill for4, 5 or 6 years. so you will only be required to go to a drill meeting for those years.  the last number will be how many years you spend in the IRR. which is inactive ready reserve. in other words, they can still "call you back up".  by the way, if you enlist in the DEP you will start burning time off of your IRR time.   just thought i would tell you that so that you would know what you are getting into.
