What is the minimum length a sailboat should be to comfortably cross the atlantic?

I realize that saying "comfortably cross the atlantic" sounds naive since it's challenging whatever the size but what's a general length where one is not completely risking their life? I also realize this is a very general question since the mapped route, season, quality of the boat etc effects this but I just need a general idea. Also what are some well known models you may recommend?

  1. It's been done in 30' boats, but I think a 42' Ketch rig would be reasonable given crew size and cost.   Weekend sailors who plan a head can do this safely given sat. weather and doing it in stages.

  2. well, there is as you have said about 3,000 variables here....but for a crew of 1,2 or 3 look at no less than 35 feet....you need length for speed and for hull size to carry food fuel and water......if 1 2 or 3 people can handle a 45 footer and you can afford it, then look at that.....

well known doesnt mean ocean capable.and even good offshore sometimes are lemons.so start reading cruising magazines ad see what others are sailing; look at the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers or the Caribbean 1500 to see what others have.brands? Swan, Valiant, Cabo Rico, Bristol........
