  1. unfortunately, unless said archaeologist works a regular job, such as a teacher, the amount an archaeologist can make varies widely.

most digs are funded by grants; or otherwise under the contract of a private party. the pay from these can vary from nothing to ???, depending on how important the site is to the funding person.

it is very sad to say, but we do not become archaeologists to become rich!!!  we do it because we love knowledge and we care.

  2. It depends on region, degree, etc. If you have a B.A. with field school, plan on starting around 8-10 dollars an hour. If you are doing shovelbum work (living in hotels) plan of getting around $25 a day for food... if you save that up, you'll make more.  With a master's degree and no real experience, you could start around $15 an hour.

This is not the field to get into for money!

  3. I make $7.50/hour washing dishes during the week, and volunteer my time on weekends for free!

  4. Depends on the job.  For those on the low end of the totem pole, the CRM field technicians, it's usually about $10-$14 an hour, or about $400-$560 a week.  Usually, there's per diem in there as well, which is generally about $25 or $30 a day.  There are jobs that pay less, because they can.  From what I can see, jobs in the DC/Baltimore area usually pay around $9 an hour, and they only take locals, so no per diem.  They must use a lot of college students.  There are also jobs that pay more.  For instance, they may not offer hotel rooms, so the per diem will be a lot higher, anywhere from $55 to $85 a day, which is a lot, especially if you like camping.  Or they might be prevailing wage jobs, working for a federal agency, in which case you'd be making $15-$20 an hour.

Higher-ups make more, of course, but I don't know how much is average for them.  I don't know what wages are common for government agencies or universities, because I've never worked for either.  You make decent money in general, but nothing you'll get rich on.  If you do CRM, though, make sure to save up.  Chances are, you'll spend at least a few weeks unemployed every year.

Whether it is called experience or course credit, it's still being paid nothing.
