  1. Any discussion on what the elephant eats has to begin with why they eat so much. The main reason beyond their great size for eating so many pounds of food each day is that the elephant digestion track is actually poorly adapted to extracting the most out of its vegetative food.

Elephants spend 18 to 20 hours a day feeding, everyday  they have to consume 330-375 pounds of vegetation elephant is also enormous 20 to 40 gallons of water a day is required to keep them healthy.

    What they eat

Despite the images that we may have in our minds on an elephant eating nothing but hay or grass, the preferred elephant foods are fruits, berries and certain wood pulps .Despite its preference for sweet fruit and berries the elephant cannot afford to be to choosy. Because it has a rather large amount of food to eat so it will take in everything vegetative and edible to include grass both dry and green, roots stalks and herbaceous (woody) plants of all kinds
