I personally like Latin and Latin-based languages--French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish--in that order. I also think Finnish sounds very melodic. Though it is not an actual, existing language, I also love the sound of Tolkien's Quenya, which he based off of Latin and Finnish.

What language(s) do you think has the most beautiful sounds?

  1. What is the most beautiful language to listen to?

I personally like Latin and Latin-based languages--French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish--in that order. I also think Finnish sounds very melodic. Though it is not an actual, existing language, I also love the sound of Tolkien's Quenya, which he based off of Latin and Finnish.

What language(s) do you think has the most beautiful sounds?

French of course in terms of the Romance Languages because it has an unique passion of flow in the terms linguistics rhythm I mean. It is the most beautiful Romance human language around. Listen to various famous French singers or famous singers who sang in French - for instance the famous Celine Dion to Edith Piaf to Corinne Hermes gave French music a unique rhythm and the language of French into new heights, new light and new dimension. French poetry is also beautiful because ones express the flow of human language - yes of course French Language is a very beautiful human language in terms of the Romance Languages and the most difficult languages in the world to learn. Once you learn and know the language, the mind becomes open to new horizons and everything becomes very easy, the possibilities are endless to describe everything from the expressions, the tone, the mood and the various figurative human communication. I recently read novel by Balzac which had all the elements as well as good content in the novel.

French literature is one of the world's most brilliant and has been for centuries an impressive facet of French civilization, an object of national pride, and a principal focus for feelings of national identity. Because the French are a literate people, passionately interested in questions of language and in the exploration of ideas, the influence of French intellectuals on the course of French history during the last three centuries has been great, and remains so today. A high proportion of European literary trends have originated in France. The continuing prestige of literature in France is evidenced today by the innumerable private societies devoted to individual authors and by the large number of literary prizes awarded each year. A knowledge of French literature, in short, is the key to an understanding of the French people.

At the bottom of her heart, however, she was waiting for something to happen. Like shipwrecked sailors, she turned despairing eyes upon the solitude of her life, seeking afar off some white sail in the mists of the horizon. She did not know what this chance would be, what wind bring it to her, towards what shore it would drive her, if it would be a shallop or a three-decker, laden with anguish or full of bliss to the portholes. But each morning, as she awoke, she hoped it would come that day; she listened to every sound, sprang up with a start, wondered that it did not come; then at sunset, always more saddened, she longed for the morrow.  GUSTAVE FLAUBERT, Madame Bovary.

By the way, I speak French at home and not bias at all to other all beautiful human languages out there too. For example Italian, Spanish, Finnish and Portuguese are the Romance languages. All the human languages of the world are beautiful in their own way and in their own right as well. It is how it is being express, it is how it is being presented, it is how it is being describe and lastly or finally it is how it is being said in the right tone of course. But when we all do not understand any language, it does not mean we cannot appreciate it at all. Because of its unique expression and melodic flow of the language which gives it a passionate and expressive motion, we can understand it in this sense. Every human language in the world have some element of beautiful fluidicity. Also I would say Italian is a close second to French in terms of Romance Language but no disrespect to Spanish, Portuguese and Finnish Languages and because of its exciting flow and its harmonious expression. As well as I do not have enough knowledge to be able to be fair to other Romance Languages as well but judging of what I know so far. Learning is endless process! One example I can think is the tenor Andrea Bocelli - www.andreabocelli.com which express his songs in a beautiful way in Italian or Spanish or English but mostly Italian. Strangely he does not sing in the French Language, well you cannot have it all. He is a great tenor that makes every human language he sing eloquently sounds very beautiful.  I also like the track "Canto Della Terra" and "Time to say goodbye (Con te partiro)" by Andrea Bocelli.

The English Language is also a beautiful human language but it is not classified as Romance language. All Romance languages are Latin based.

Nature languages is also a beautiful language too. Such as trees communicating with each other - you need sophisticated sound capturing machine to be able to listen and finally the sounds of birds communicating - chirping in the background.

Yes, I have seen the famous film the "Lord of the Rings" by J. R. R. Tolkien, also read it too and I also read the book "The Hobbit". I am very sorry that I am not familiar with Quenya the sounds of the language of Elves. J. R. R. Tolkien by the way he was an absolute genius and very cleverly manipulated languages to create a new language or a new dialect.

Also thinking about the question about human languages which is the most beautiful seriously now, All the human languages in the world are beautiful in their own way. From the Germanic to Italic to Romance to Celtic to Hellenic to Slavic to Baltic to Indo-Iranian to Finno-Ugric to Samoyed to Turkic to Mongolian to Tungusic to Sinitic to Tibeto-Burman to Tai to Miao-Yao to Indonesian to Micronesian to Melanesian to Polynesian to Western Sudanic to Benue-Congo to Adamawa-Eastern to Semitic to Berber to Cushitic to Egyptian to Chadic to Eastern Sudanic to Central Sudanic subgroups of languages. Please all forgive me if I miss your subgroup languages. I am not bias at all but just answering the question to the best of my ability and was not brought up that way either. I rather be honest about it. The world is my oyster!!!!!!!!

  6. I agree with bobhikes, it depends on what you say and with what kind of attitude, then any language can be melodic and beautiful. I am fluent in German and English, neither can be soft depending on the tone of voice. My favorite however is Italian, even though I don't understand it. I love listening to Eros Ramazzotti, he performs with a lot of heart and soul.

  7. To answer this simple question with ease as well as I have seen the Yahoo answers contributors always voting or always selecting European Languages because there are Europeans or European origin descent live in America, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Greenland, Corsica, Guadelope, Madeira, Gibraltar and others I have chat to.

I find Hindi, Gujarati, Panjabi, Sinhalese, Urdu, Bengali languages very beautiful. I am bias now! I also like the European languages too but it seems to me there are some element of favouritism, preference and forgone conclusion that the Europeans or European origin descent will always vote for their languages and always have bias to other languages around the world due to ignorance or high rate of prejudice or xenophobia. Having an Extreme Eurocentric or Extreme Ethnocentric mentality in here. They have been totally brainwashed I think. Maybe there are something wrong with them. Sooner the world communicating with each other the better it becomes. I do not see their languages as superior to my language or my language origin either. I am speaking out on such biases in here. Do they, I mean Europeans and Americans ever vote for other languages besides Japanese or Chinese. I would like to see some changes on this quickly. Have more respect for other languages around the world. I think it is total disgrace and excuse on this. Where is the respect and recognition? We are not getting it. We all live in the same planet for heaven's sake.
