I'd like to play a song for a friend's wedding, but there are SOO many to choose from. Any suggestions? And yes, it will probably be just me and my violin. (I'd really like it to have a slower, more haunting melody.)

  1. Canon in D..no question.

I know its kind of cliche and its hard to find the solo piece...but even if you solely play the Violin I part for the Orchestra piece...it will bring tears.  I know it.

  2. The most beautiful melody I know is Salut D'Amour by Elgar - I walked down the aisle to this song!

  3. I'm picking out songs currently, you can never go wrong with Ava Marie though.

  4. Canon in D!

  5. Procession: Cannon in D

Recession: "Everyday" By Buddy Holly to a flute and cello and it was beautiful.

  6. For a wedding, my hands-down favorite for violin is the "Flower Duet from Lakme": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0a8eyaCl... Unfortunately, it sounds better with accompaniment (hence being a duet).

If you want to hear the traditional wedding songs (Canon in D, Air on the G String, The Swan, Jesu, etc) check out this great trio: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_qu... Most of those songs could be probably played with just a violin but usually sound better accompanied. Of the more typical wedding songs, I think "The Swan" is adaptable for solo violin and closest to what you're going for in terms of hauntingly beautiful. Here, with violin and harp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF70N65pQ...

One song that absolutely should not be played with only one violin is "Canon in D". It has several melody lines in a "canon" (or round), which requires at least 3 instruments or a piano. Just playing one part wouldn't do it justice. Listen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABBzejbpl... It's usually used for the bridal processional, which it doesn't sound like you're doing.

Sarah Chang is a great violin soloist, search her on You Tube to get some more ideas of possible songs.

  7. Canon in D by Pachelbel

Air on the G-String by J.S. Bach

    Ave Maria

    Claire de Lune by Debussy

You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban
