halfords sell brilliant padded cycling shorts (something like worn by the riders in the tour de France

  2. Definitely proper lyrcra bike shorts with padded crotch

  3. A pair of nikey shorts.

  4. Of all the ones I've got these are probably the most comfy but they are more for winter wear.

  5. You don't wear trousers for long distance cycling.  You wear proper cycling shorts.  If it's cold, you can supplement the shorts with tights or knee warmers.  I prefer warmers because they are easy to remove when your body warms up from climbing.

There is a link to my favorites below.  Cycling shorts are like tools -- buy the best you can afford and you'll never regret it.
