  1. It probably depends on who you are talking about - large accounting firms or small independent preparers? Most smaller software companies have been swallowed up by larger companies who now offer different levels of programs with different levels of service, options and pricing.

Thompson Go System is used by 8 of the top ten acounting firms according to The CPA Technical Advisor July 23, 2008 issue http://www.cpatechnologyadvisor.com/arti...

The market is now dominated by three players:

    Wolters Kluwer/CCH/Taxwise/ATX

    Thompson/UltraTaxCreativeSolutions/GoS...

    Intuit/Lacerte/ProSeries

Alot of the independent CPA's I know of prefer CCH Pro Series.

Drake is the only independent tax software with a solid 10% of the market.  Drake users are extremely loyal.  This is the software our office uses.

    Somewhere towards the bottom is

    H&R Block/TaxWorks

I have seen a review of tax software in the past couple of years that listed estimated users, but did not find such information in a Google search.  You might try an internet search and see if you can find the information you are looking for.

  2. Don't know.  Taxwise?  Lacerte?  Pro-series?

  3. I have used Lacerte, GoSystem, and CorpTax with the different companies I've work with.  Another popular one is ProSystem.  I wouldn't say there's a "most common" one, but there are various applications out there.
