  1. The most common? If you're going to set up a peer to peer/workgroup network without a router the only way I know to do it would be with whats called a "crossover" cable. Just be sure to set up both machines with static IP addresses, the same subnet mask and the same workgroup name. Also make sure to share out the C drives or at least a folder you want each machine to access...on BOTH computers.

    All that being said, if you want to just set up a peer to peer network with more than two machines, get a hub or switch and use standard CAT 5 cables. The other rules above still apply.
