Because of the population distribution in the USA, I would say more people go to the pool than the beach. Not everyone has easy access to the ocean.

When we did have a swimming pool we hardly ever used it except maybe for a late night swim... we found ourselves at the beach more often... Its just the atmosphere, and the people watching etc.. I just found it more fun...
