  1. The most common system used in North America is wood framing built on a concrete or masonry foundation wall and covered with wood siding. Here's a brief description of the system:

    However, in the Southeast you'll find a lot of wood framed houses covered with brick siding (called brick-veneer construction). In the Southwest and Florida you can find houses build with concrete masonry units covered with stucco. And in any mild climate the foundation may be a concrete slab instead of a concrete or masonry foundation wall.


  2. Most people use wood construction. The more solid homes that I've seen are made of concrete, however. Most of Europe does it this way. If you want to be green and do a nice house cheaper, you can do a straw bale home with plaster in and out. Very well insulated and easy on the utilities.

  3. Start at the ground and work your way up. :)
