  1. I would have to say Vietnam. It has been changing hands since 111 B.C. Its conquerors and occupiers have been several different Chinese dynasties, three Mongol invasions, Cambodians, many different civil wars (including one which lasted more than 40 years!), French, Japanese, Russians, Americans.

  2. Egypt, which was conquered by the Greek, Romans, Persians, Arabs, Kurds, Turks, French, & British, & probably others.

  3. The Low Countries and France. Yes - this is more than one.

Consider Luxembourg, Belgium, Alsace/Lorraine,even France. They've been run over time and time again.

My Great-Grandmother actually had TWO names - Salome for when the French were in power and Sadie for when the Germans had it.

This is Alsace - is it a Country? It used to be.

  4. Just a guess, the strategic islands of the Mediterranean*, for example, Cyprus or Malta, have been invaded many times.

    * being at the fringes of many empires (ancient and modern), aggressive trading nations and opposing religions.

  5. Poland must be one of the most conquered. It is unfortunate because of its location - situated between Prussia/Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia as well as visiting people like the Mongols. Poland has no natural barriers, is on flat plains and can easily be invaded with little ideal defensive positions. It has been partitioned and re-partitioned and moved about many times.

Recent examples - three parititons and eventual abolition in the late 18th century - invaded by Germany, then Russia, then Germany in World War One, invaded by Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939 and then Germany in 1941, and under Soviet control from 1945 to 1991.

  6. This would be very difficult to determine.

Belgium is often called "The Doormat of Europe" due to either French armies travelling through it to attack Germany, or German armies passing through it to attack France.

  7. Well, since France grew to ten times its original size in the last 2000 years I would say History Buff is wrong. Flanders are a good guess as they spent their time being fought over by everyone since the 15th century. Spanish empire, Hapsburg empire, French, English.... For 200 years they saw the armies of Europe walk back and forth over their land. Vietnam seems to have had its share of invasions too. Here, have a look

I know there's a difference between invasions and conquests but the list is interesting

  8. Countries that are still Around? France. Interesting tid bit - the country that is still around and has fought the most battles against other countries is ... drum roll please... China.*

  9. Jerusalem changed hands like a hot potato during the crusades.  It have not have been conquered by the most civilizations but it is definitely the most conquered.

  10. Italy

  11. Countries are often arbitrary, but definetly one of the most conquered cities is Jerusalem.  In fact, that city has been basically captured and re-captured non-stop by different groups of people dating back to like 900 years B.C., which is ironic because its name means "leagacy of peace."
