What is the most economical car that is currently mass produced?

I think it's the Smart car Fourtwo for $11,000 and 41mpg because the hybrid Prius is $25,000 msrp and $14,000 buys a lot of gas over the years.

Is there anything out there more economical than the Smart in North America?

Volkswagen is coming out with a Jetta that gets 60 mpg on diesel fuel, and it starts at 16k.

Honda Fit $15,875

the Smart is not good for Hwy driving, maybe city driving and short trips but it's choppy and not practical for real world driving.

The VW Jetta TDI will be a very "green" car but expect it to sell over MSRP.

the Toyota Yaris, Chevy Aveo and Nissan versa are all inferior to the Honda Fit.

all Hybrids cost more than their normally aspirated twins, the benefit is not the money you save at the pump but the diminished amount of pollution your making. Until the batteries become more efficient and less expensive Hybrids are not that economical.

one thing about hybrid cars that they don't tell you is that the battery dies after 4 years and replacing that COSTS not 1,000 or 2,000 it can go up to 6-7.000

yes smart cars are really economical but i would never buy one of those if you want a economical car Toyota Yaris is a good option

The SmartCar is definately a great bargain.  It is very cheap to buy and run.  Now, you won't be hosting many carpools or towing anything, but it will get you around and save a huge amount of money at the pump.

  You can get some around $10,000 which is a great deal for a newer car.  And it is not a hybrid, just a very efficient small car.  There is a new version with four doors coming out, but the standard model is only 2 person (barely).

  You definately need to account for the battery replacement cost on a hybrid, you should add $7000 to the price since you will probably have to replace it at least once in the time you own it.
