To relocate in about 18 month to a year. after checking information about desired areas in certain states...moving with a small cat a minimum amount of furniture (most will be sold before moving), so only a very small truck will be needed.

Not transporting a car.

Slightly disabled senior with family able to help ?

Any suggestions ?

Place to call home waiting for immediate occupancy.

Any ideas welcome.

  1. Budget rent a truck is economical. I have always used Penske but it is not the most economical.Check around and compare prices..UHaul, Penske, Budget for one way rental!

  2. I suggest you get some movers to do it for you. Advantages:

-Cheaper than hiring a truck yourself

-You don't need someone with a truck license

-You don't need to worry about loading and unloading

-Generally worry free and quick. Have a ring around for the cheapest.

Did you really need the internet for that?

  3. The best thing would be to move with only your personal luggage, try to avoid using trucks etc. Sell all your settings

  4. After moving across the country twice in two years I found that the most practical thing is to move as few things as possible, you're smart there. You can replace things much cheaper than you can move them.

We had very little money on our second move, the one from Atlanta to Arizona. We used the cheapest method I could find which was renting the cheapest rental truck which is always UHaul. We hired guys to help us load and unload. You can find movers to load on craigslist or to be honest, every town has a street corner where day laborers congregate.

As far as cost the next step up would have been a place like upack.com. they drop the truck off, you load it or hire someone to load it, and they pick it up and drive it to the new location. This is how we did our first move. It was a fraction of what a mover would cost. After your things are loaded they are securely walled off and another family uses the remaining space. IN this way, several people are sharing the gas expense.

Next most expensive method is to hire movers to do it all, companies like Bekins or Mayflower

Surprisinly the most expensive method was PODS. They drop the storage container off, you fill it with furniture etc, they pick it up and relocate it. They wanted twice what Bekins quoted me and Bekins does the loading and unloading.

Once you know what city you're moving to I would call movers like Bekings, Mayflower and get a quote. That's the easiest way to move so if you know what they'd charge you can judge if other methods would be worth the savings. Don't assume movers would be too expensive, they may not be as bad as you think as you won't be taking much with you.

If you consider renting a truck and driving it or having a friend/family member drive it Uhaul is the cheapest but they have a reputation of breaking down and they tend to be older trucks that are more difficult to handle. Budget is a little more expensive and a little better but the Hertz trucks are the best, also the most expensive. If you call for a qoute they can also tell you what gas mileage the truck will get so you can figure the cost of gas into your estimate. They even rent regular cargo vans that drive just like a car and as you aren't taking much that might work for you.

I'm going to look for the online moving calculator that I used and will send you the link if I find it. It was great, you enter in how many beds, sofas etc, how many boxes and it gives you the pound estimate and recommends a truck size.

    EDIT

I'm glad you asked. As someone said, hiring movers would be the obvious thing to do. Nice if you don't have to worry about money and just use the most expensive method for everything but you might pay twice what you need to for the same service. There's never any harm in asking. If some bozo doesn't like it he shouldn't bother answering.

  5. you should buy a new dodge ram 2500 diesel the price for diesel might seem high but diesel fuel lasts longer than gas     get the smallest one you can to get more fuel mileage and they are big and fuel efficient

  6. Well, the most economical option would be walking, but that would also be extremely impractical. I don't suggest trying it. I think a small truck would be fine, hiring wouldn't be too pricey.
