The painters next door used a Benjamin Moore stain. They scraped the old paint with scrapers, no sanding....and then they trimmed with a brush and rolled on with a thick nap roller that was dipped in the bucket of paint and wrung out or rolled out to remove excess paint, , even going several stories high, 2 coats.

  1. The outside needs to be power washed, prep and then have the color sprayed verses a brush & roller.

  2. No primer???? There should be primer on any bare spots, at least. And primer all over the house really makes paint adhere. Maybe all-over primer wouldn't be good with a solid or semi-solid stain. Sanding isn't needed, but it sure does look better near the front and back door and wherever significant areas have been scraped off. Oh wait -- if the paint is glossy, you have to sand lightly. But usually once the house needs painting, there's no gloss left.

Some painters say a roller's not as good as a brush for exterior -- you can roll the paint on, but you should also brush it while it's wet. Two reasons: to get it into all the little hairline cracks, and to get rid of the roller texture. Also, some siding has ridges, and a brush is needed to coat the edges of the ridges properly.

I don't know... people in my neighborhood have their houses rolled and sprayed all the time, and the paintjobs don't fail any faster.

  3. Are you sure they used Stain? Usually you can't stain a previously painted surface without sanding all the paint off till you get to the bare wood, Stain needs to sink into the wood, not sit on it as paint would.. Primer can not be used with stain as it prevents it from sinking in. If you pay someone to paint your house, you need to be careful. Some painters don't do the job correctly. They take shortcuts like not preparing the surface the way it needs to be.They think most folks don't notice because once the paint goes on,it looks good. For about four years. When you prepare a exterior surface the correct way,it needs to be  washed first to remove the dirt. Then scraped to remove the chipping old paint. All cracks and gaps need to be filled with a exterior water-based,paint-able putty or Spackle. Then they need to sand any rough spots smooth. After that a high quality exterior primer should be used.(oil based is best for that) Then once that has fully dried, use a high quality oil based or water based exterior paint.Yes that can be rolled on. Rough surfaces ,a fluffy high napped rolled would be used, and normally a brush used on the trims. Natural bristle for Oil Based paint and Synthetic for Water Based Paint. If it has been primed and prepared right, you shouldn't need two coats unless you are covering a darker colour with a lighter one. Don't be fooled ,it sounds like your neighbours will be painting again before long. Byee
