Question:

What is the most effective method to brace/support the limbs of my Ruby Red Grapefruit Tree?

This is the first year that I have been worried that the weight of numerous fruit per limb will break large limbs from the trunk. The Ruby Red Grapefruit Tree I am referring to is 10 years old, healthy, and has been an outstanding producer for the past 6 years. In advance, Thank You for your assistance in this matter.

  1. In the orchards near my house they used 2X2 posts with tire pieces wrapped around the limb.  You don't want anything hard rubbing against the limb.  Be sure to remove them after you pick the fruit.  Replace them next year when they are needed.

  2. Hmm yum Ruby Reds!  I wish I could grow mine outside year-long.

Since your tree is otherwise healthy, the only thing I can suggest is using tree braces, wooden V-stakes (A-frames)that hold up the fruit-bearing loaded branches of trees here in AZ.

You could also remove some of the fruit early in the seaon, before they get too big, to allow other fruit to get even bigger.
