  1. civic hybrid

  2. The Flintstones car.

  3. The Citroen C1/Toyota Aygo 1.4 diesel returns 80mpg (far better than any hybrid car on the market today), and is the most fuel efficient car currently available.

The Loremo (available in early 2010 will return 150mpg) and will be the most fuel efficient car upon launch.

  4. From what I've read, the Honda Insight was the best as far as MPG, but I just read that Honda has retired that car and no longer makes it.  Very fuel efficient, but not the best looking car and it was only a two seater.  The Toyota Prius is probably the best MPG vehicle still being produced.  The most fuel efficient per dollar I read is the Toyota Yaris which isn't a hybrid at all.  And the best of the big vehicles is the hybrid Chevy Tahoe.  I've read that it gets as good of gas mileage as the standard Toyota Camry.  And you are talking about a big SUV that still keeps its towing power.  Now that is impressive.

Chevy is also coming out with the Chevy Volt that is supposed to be a production car here in a few years.  That should be the best fuel efficient car when it reaches the market.  The first 40 miles it runs totally on electricity.  After that it runs on a gasoline engine that charges the car.  I think combined it is supposed to get like 150 mpg.  The idea is that the majority of Americans travel less than 20 miles one way to work.  So for most commutes to and from work the car would run entirely on electricity, making commutes way cheaper.

  5. get your car converted run on chip fat!

  6. Hydrogen cars are not viable right now and won't be for several decades for reasons discussed in the link below.  Honda is only selling 100-200 of its fuel cell cars right now in southern California where there are some hydrogen fuel stations, and probably only to celebrities because they're going to be incredibly expensive.

Right now your best option is probably the Prius.  It gets close to 50 mpg, and the 2009 model (available in January) is supposed to be even better, getting a power increase and also a fuel efficiency increase to over 50 mpg.

There are also some fully electric cars starting to come out.  The first affordable highway speed EV is coming out in July - the Green Vehicles Triac.

If you can get your hands on one, it's actually a bit cheaper than a Prius and costs even less to fuel.  EVs cost about 2-3 cents per mile to recharge whereas a 50 mpg car costs 8 cents per mile if gas costs $4/gallon.

  7. A small engined, light bodied turbo diesel car will be very economical and best on the environment.

The cars with the lowest CO2 rating are the best for the environment.
